Skin Rolling: A Diagnostic and Treatment Myofascial Release Technique

Skin rolling is a form of myofascial release. It is used to identify and treat areas of restriction or abnormal cross-linking of fascia or connective tissue in a painful area in the body. It is important to understand ‘fascia’ in order to understand the technique. Fascia is a loose irregular clear tissue (think about saran wrap) that covers the muscles, bones, nerves, organs, and blood vessels. Fascia can be subcutaneous: the layer between the skin and deep fascia, or can be deep fascia: the layer between and around muscles and other structures, holding them in place. Other fascia found in the[...]

Post Partum Physical Therapy Performed Head to Toe Today

Our post partum patient came in today with several complaints: painful breastfeeding, diastasis recti, and dyspareunia (painful intercourse). After careful evaluation we found her left breast to have 2 areas of clogged ducts, 1.5 fingers width diastasis recti at the umbilicus (belly button), and moderate pain of the pubococcygeus muscles (part of the pelvic floor muscles). The pubococcygeus is the first deep pelvic floor muscle on either side of the vagina. The pubococcygeus muscles are the most stretched and undergo the greatest strain during vaginal delivery as proven via 3-D computer simula[...]

A common cause of pelvic congestion syndrome are varicosities in the pelvic region. These are varicose veins—much the [...]

Female and Male Pelvic Congestion Syndrome (PCS)

Pelvic congestion syndrome is a chronic condition that affects women and men and can be a cause of chronic pelvic pain. Typical age effected is between 20 and 45 years old. Patients with pelvic congestion syndrome complain of a severe dull ache or pain in the abdomen, pelvis, groin, and/or genitalia. This can be a result of pelvic varicosities- varicose veins present similar to varicose veins of the legs. Because of vein wall weakness and inability of the vein to return the blood effectively, pressure in the vein increases as blood pools or remains in the pelvic vein. This causes pressure pain[...]
